How It Works?
1 - Gentle light pulses act on the root of the hair
2 - The root of the hair is weakened and the hair itself falls out.
3 - Regular repetition of the treatment prevents hair regrowth.
Philips Lumea uses gentle light pulses on the hair root, creating heat and encouraging the hair root to go into a resting phase. As a result, the hairs fall out naturally and their regrowth is stopped.

The skin on the face is more sensitive and more often exposed to the sun.Most Lumea models have a special attachment for use on the face with a UV filter to prevent skin damage.Choose the appropriate setting for your skin type that ensures effective and gentle facial hair removal.Since the area around the eyes is very sensitive, we recommend that you only use the Lumea device under the cheekbones to avoid eye damage.For optimal results on the cheeks, upper lip and chin, stand in front of a mirror so you can clearly see the area you want to wax and the ready-to-light indicator.
Professional IPL hair removal has been around for 25 years, and research so far has not linked it to skin cancer or fertility problems. Users have not reported any serious side effects or injuries from long-term use. Philips Lumea devices were developed in cooperation with leading dermatologists and tested on more than 2,000 women. The IPL technology of Lumea devices is derived from the technology used in professional salons, but we have adapted it so that it complies with all safety regulations for devices for home use. As with all skin care products, it is important to use the device according to the instructions in the user manual.
The safety system in Lumea devices prevents illumination if the attachment is not in full contact with the skin. The built-in UV filter ensures that the light only affects the hairs and not the skin. The skin color sensor prevents exposure if the skin is too dark. We recommend that you use the Lumea device in a well-lit room, so that you perceive the light less intensely when illuminated. Side effects and complications are possible but very unlikely if you use Lumea according to the instructions and precautions in the user manual.
Philips Lumea was developed with your safety in mind, so it does not harm your eyes. The safety system prevents illumination when the device is not in full contact with the skin. The device should always be in good contact with the skin to avoid unnecessary scattering of light. Do not use in areas near the eyes or to groom eyebrows. You do not need to wear safety glasses during use. Use Lumea in a well-lit area to reduce its blinding effect. Strong light appears weaker in a well-lit room.
The Lumea device is safe and gentle enough to depilate the entire bikini area, so feel free to go Brazilian or Hollywood style (only a narrow strip of hair or no hair at all). To avoid an unpleasant experience, choose a lower setting for darker colored areas. Even for sensitive pubic areas, use a lower setting depending on how you feel. A lower setting is recommended because these areas are more sensitive to IPL and the use of IPL technology becomes uncomfortable more quickly. Do not use the Lumea device on the inner labia, vagina and anus.
No. Philips Lumea has not been tested for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, so do not use it in these cases. Philips developed the Lumea device in collaboration with leading dermatologists, who advised against the use of Lumea and other light hair removal methods during pregnancy and breastfeeding as a protective measure against possible side effects.
No, do not use Philips Lumea directly on or near large skin tags or freckles. If you have a skin mark on the area you want to depilate, try to avoid it, as the pigment in the mark would absorb the light energy. Direct exposure to skin tags or spots can cause discomfort or even burns.
No, IPL is not harmful to health. Professional IPL has been around for 25 years and research to date has not linked it to skin cancer or fertility problems.
Yes. You can use the Philips Lumea device all year round, even in summer. You just need to follow some precautions that apply before and after sunbathing. By this we mean lounging in the sun; shorter exposure of the skin to the sun due to staying outdoors is not problematic.
Sunbathing before using the Philips Lumea device:
* After sunbathing, wait at least 48 hours before using the Philips Lumea device.
* Do not use Philips Lumea on burned skin as long as the burns are present.
* Please note that the skin darkens after all types of sun exposure.
* Always refer to the recommended skin/hair color chart and choose a lower light intensity to avoid skin reactions and side effects.
Sunbathing after using the Philips Lumea device:
* Your skin is more sensitive immediately after depilation.
* Before exposing the depilated areas to the sun, wait at least 24 hours or until the redness disappears.
* Cover the depilated areas from the sun for 48 hours after depilation or use a sunscreen (*at least factor 50).
None of the participants in extensive studies of the Lumea device described use as painful, as long as they chose the appropriate settings according to their skin tone and hair color. Some participants reported a "warm sensation", "stinging" or "itching" during the test, but these sensations disappeared after a few minutes or an hour at the latest. We recommend that you first get used to the Philips Lumea by doing a few test exposures with the lowest recommended setting near the area you want to epilate. As the use becomes comfortable, you can gradually increase the intensity of the light as needed, but only enough so that it does not become painful.
You may occasionally feel pain during or after waxing if:
* use the Lumea device on unshaven skin;
* set the Lumea device to too high a light intensity for your skin tone;
* illuminate the same area several times;
* use the Lumea device on open wounds, inflamed skin, infections, tattoos, burns, etc.
If you use the Lumea device according to the instructions, more serious side effects should not occur.
You may experience the following mild skin reactions:
* Redness: It is normal to experience mild to moderate redness immediately after waxing, which is not dangerous and will disappear quickly.
* Sensation of heat: you may feel heat, itching, heat or tingling during waxing. This is also normal, and the sensation will disappear immediately after waxing.
Read the user manual carefully, especially the list of contraindications, and always follow the instructions. If you notice other side effects, consult your doctor.
Do not use IPL technology if you have any of the medical conditions listed below:
- If you have a skin disease, such as active skin cancer, if you have had skin cancer or cancer on any other organ or part of the body that you intend to wax.
- If you have had problems with blood vessels in the past, such as varicose veins or ectasia of veins in the areas you intend to depilate.
– If your skin is sensitive to light and rashes or allergic reactions appear quickly.
– If you have infections, rashes, burns, inflamed follicles, open wounds, abrasions, herpes simplex, wounds or lesions and hematomas on the areas you intend to depilate.
– If you have diabetes, lupus erythematosus, porphyria or heart failure.
Do not use the device in the following areas:
– On warts, tattoos or on permanent make-up. This may cause burns or skin discoloration.
Note: The list is not exhaustive. If you are not sure whether you can use the device, consult your doctor.
Intense pulsed light (IPL) prevents hair regrowth by illuminating hair follicles under the skin with pulses of light. The melanin (color pigment) of the hair absorbs light pulses, so the effectiveness depends on the amount of melanin in the hair. (Blonde, gray and white hairs contain no or too little melanin for IPL technology to be effective on these colors. Red hairs contain a different type of melanin that does not respond to IPL technology).
For IPL technology to be effective, it is also essential that there is little melanin, otherwise the light would be attracted to the skin. Dark or very dark skin is more attracted to light, which can damage it and cause burns, blisters or discoloration. You can estimate your skin tone using the skin tone/hair color chart in the user manual and online.
